Karan or Karana is a Hindu community from the Indian state of Odisha. Practising scribes, Karana was actually the name of a post occupied by educated people from all caste groups. However, this post was only among the Odia-speaking community; hence, in Andhra Pradesh, where other Odia-speaking people lived, a Karanam post was created. Karanas was regarded as the official record keepers in the royal courts of the Odisha tributary states.
